The move-in checklist: pack a unit like you've done it before

April 8, 2026 · 4 min read · I-66 Self Storage

There's a real difference between a unit packed by a first-timer and one packed by someone who's done it before. The second one holds more, nothing gets crushed, and the owner can actually find things later. Here's the playbook.

Before you load

A little prep goes a long way:

  • Use uniform boxes — they stack like bricks instead of a Jenga tower
  • Label every box on the side, not the top (you can't see tops when stacked)
  • Wrap mattresses and upholstery in covers, not plastic sheeting that traps moisture
  • Take photos of electronics cabling before you unplug

Loading order

Load the things you'll never need first, at the back: off-season gear, keepsakes, furniture you're storing long-term. Save a front row for anything you might come back for — documents, tools, the box of chargers. And leave a center walkway if the unit allows it; the ability to reach the back without unloading the front is worth a few square feet.

Stack smart

Heavy and dense on the bottom, light and fragile on top — with two extras people forget:

  • Stand couches and mattresses on end to halve their footprint
  • Use dresser drawers and appliance interiors as free box space
  • Never stack directly against the walls in a standard unit — leave an inch for airflow
  • Disc-lock the door even during the move-in day lunch run

The five-minute finish

Before you roll the door down for the last time: photograph the packed unit (insurance loves this), note where the important boxes are in your phone, and set up autopay in the tenant portal so the rent never crosses your mind again. Done like a pro.
