What size storage unit do I need? A no-nonsense guide
June 12, 2026 · 5 min read · I-66 Self Storage
The most common question we get isn't about price — it's "will my stuff fit?" Renting a unit that's too small means a second trip and a second lease; renting one that's too big means paying for air. Here's the honest version of what fits where, based on watching hundreds of real move-ins.
5x10 — the studio apartment
Our smallest size, and more space than people expect. Think of a walk-in closet: a queen mattress set stands on its side along one wall, and you still have room for a dresser, a small couch, a TV, and ten to fifteen boxes. If everything you're storing could fit in the back of a pickup — maybe two trips — this is your unit.
10x10 — the one-bedroom
Our most-rented size, and the one people are most surprised by. A full one-bedroom apartment — bed, couch, dining table, appliances, boxes — fits with a walkway down the middle if you stack deliberately. Pro tip: keep a walkway. Future-you will need something from the back.
10x15 and 10x20 — houses and vehicles
A 10x15 handles a two-to-three bedroom home. The 10x20 is literally a one-car garage: it takes a full three-bedroom house, or an actual car. If you're between sizes, go up — the price difference is usually less than the cost of discovering your patio set doesn't fit.
Still not sure?
Use the 30-second size finder on our homepage, or just call the office — a human who has seen a thousand move-ins will answer, and we'd rather put you in the right unit than the bigger one.
